Vivo V19 Neo Review: Familiar but Different

And here’s the Vivo V19 Neo, the new 2020 smartphone from Vivo. It is a successor to the Vivo V17 Pro which we reviewed last year. Now in the title, we called it “Familiar but Different”. Why is that so? Let’s find out!

When we first got the unit and received the specs sheet, we thought there was a mistake with the details because specs are very much the same with last year’s Vivo V17 Pro. Apparently, the specs are really the same. But when it comes to the hardware, it is a completely different story.

Vivo has ditched the motorized pop up selfie camera of the previous model and adopted a simple and small hole punch on the display to house the 32MP selfie camera. Vivo also adopted the rectangular L shaped camera arrangement for the rear shooters which we first saw from Samsung. With the motorized mechanism gone, the Vivo V19 Neo feels so light and easier to hold with one hand.

Vivo never disappoints us when it comes to their phone’s display quality. The V19 Neo’s AMOLED display is bright and vibrant as always. Brightness output is quite adequate outdoors but struggles a bit under direct sunlight. Watching movies and videos has been an enjoyable experience thanks to its AMOLED display.

Vivo’s own Funtouch OS has its own improvements this year. Icons are flatter and Settings menu are cleaner and easier to navigate. But for first time Vivo users, Funtouch OS may take some time to get used to. Worry not, learning curve will be very short as the UI is easy to understand.

Under the hood, we have the same processor used from last year’s model. The Snapdragon 675 is an aging chipset but still very capable. It can ran games and multitasking very well. But the competition has already upgraded their phones with much newer chipsets. We think Vivo should put the latest Snapdragon 720G chipset here just to keep up with the competition.

The camera remains unchanged from the previous model. It is a quad camera set up with a 48MP main camera leading the charge plus an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP depth sensor (bokeh) and 2MP macro lens. At the front is the same 32MP selfie camera. Don’t get us wrong, these are pretty good cameras and they take very good photos on different shooting situations. But we think Vivo should be contemplating on upgrading their camera hardware to make it more competitive in the market.

Here check out some of our sample photos

One improvement Vivo did for this phone is the battery. From 4,100 mAh of last year’s model, it is now 4,500 for this phone. Based on our video loop test, we managed to get 6 to 7 hours of screen on time with about 15% battery left. For normal moderate use, the battery would last you a day and a half.

Internet speeds has been decent with WiFi and 4G/LTE networks. We seldom notice drops in signal quality and inconsistencies in speeds. Calls are clear with no issues.

The Vivo V19 Neo is a familiar but a different phone from its predecessor. Different because of its new design. Underneath the hardware is completely different story. It is the same chipset, same display size, same memory configuration, same cameras. This is not a bad thing though. Maybe Vivo was thinking “Why change if ain’t broken?”. The phone takes good photos, great AMOLED display, the chipset performs very well on games and multitasking still. But the competition has upgraded their phones already. We hope Vivo could follow the upgrades on their next model.
