What caught out eye is the unique placement of the rear cameras. Actually we like the diamond camera module as it stand out from the crowd of the smartphones. We also like the paint job Knight Black. Our camera doesn’t do much justice but from the Vivo logo up to the camera module, there is a like an aura effect. It is subtle but noticeable.
Two things we like are present – USB Type C and a 3.5 audio jack. We also love the red accent on the power button. It can be easily seen and distinguished from the volume rockers. There is a right amount of heft to the device but not too heavy like its sibling the Vivo NEX 3 which we are currently reviewing.
As for the display, we have a 6.38-inch AMOLED display here. As expected it is punchy and very vibrant. Although we are happy that it is very much readable outdoors when cranking up the brightness to the maximum.
Funtouch OS 9.2 is the custom skin running on top of Android 9.0 Pie. If you have used a Vivo smartphone before, this will be very familiar. If not, the UI may take some getting used to. Swiping down from the screen only reveals the notifications but when swiping up from the screen reveals you quick settings which is very different from everybody else. There is no app drawer here so all apps are scattered on the home screen.
Under the hood, the phone is powreed by a Snapdragon 665 chipset with 8GB RAM. We think 8 gigs is more than enough for gaming and multitasking already. If we will nitpick, we hope Vivo could settle for a Snapdragon 7-series especially it will be more suitable for the price. But that’s just us. We will do further testing for our full review
FIRST CAMERA SAMPLES
Generally, we are impressed with the first few photos taken from the device. We have a 48MP main shooter, an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor. At the front we have a 32MP selfie camera. As we mentioned before on our past Vivo smartphone reviews, their phone really can take great selfies and that includes this phone.
Here are some of our first sample shots
We think the Vivo S1 Pro’s standout feature is its design. It does stand out from phones with circular camera modules or camera modules placed horizontally. The cameras did not disappoint and we are excited to test them further and shoot in different modes. If you are looking for a stylish midrange smartphone, add the Vivo S1 Pro to your shopping list.
