The Realme 5 has a generic design – rounded sides, flat display, horizontal logo and rear camera layout. We’ve seen this already with other phones. But people in this orice segment does not care about the phone’s looks as long as it is well built and performs well. Just keep in mind that the phone is quite hefty due to the large 5,000 mAh battery.

We have a 6.5-inch display here with a 720p resolution. We hope Realme opted for full HD since its display is bigger than its competition and enough battery to power it. Nonetheless, the display is bright and sharp to our eyes.

Realme uses its sister brand’s custom skin on top of Android, OPPO’s ColorOS 6. There are two types of screen options, one with an app drawer and one without. Realme opted for the one with an app drawer by default. ColorOS is no different than any other Android skin. But the thing we love about OPPO’s custom skin is their sheer smoothness even years down the road.

Under the hood is the Snapdragon 665 which an improvement from the Snapdragon 660. This means better gaming and multitasking performance. On our daily grind, we are very satisfied with it. No lags, no slowdowns. Gaming experience is also good as long as you set graphics settings to medium.

Realme is putting all its resources to give the best camera experience possible for this price point. At the back, we have a 12MP main sensor, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro lens and 2MP depth sensor. We are very happy with the photos taken from the macro lens. Taking photos just 4mm away from the subject is something new to try at this price point. Photos from the 12MP are also good but we love shooting is in night mode. The ultrawide camera when taken right will give you really great wide angle photos.

With the combination of a low power chipset and a low resolution screen and a very large battery will give you 3 days of juice. If you do a video loop test like we did, it will be hard for you to kill the battery. We managed 8 hours of screen on time for the video loop test and still have 56%. We think we have our new battery champ here.

Connectivity is superb. We never encountered any sudden signal drops both WiFi and 4G/LTE. Internet speeds using 4G is also decent. Calls are clear with no issues.

The Realme 5 is truly the best entry smartphone to buy this holiday season. Its a perfect gift for those who will own a smartphone for the first time or simply for those who are looking for a smartphone that works on a budget. You get great battery life, a decent screen, very capable cameras, smooth and lag free navigation. We give our highest recommendation to anyone looking for a smartphone under 10k.
