HARDWARE

The OPPO A9 2020 reminds us so much of the OPPO R17 Pro of last year and its distant cousin, the OnePlus 7 Pro. The phone is big and quite heavy probably due to to the large 5,000 mAh battery. Its a bit chunky too so expect some bulge when putting it on your pockets. Overall it is a pretty well built device.

Two things you need to know – USB Type C and audio jack is present on this phone. Finally, OPPO has finally adopted the new USB Type C standard for their midrange phones. It is also nice to see the headphone jack is still alive here. We normally don’t cover audio performance since we are not audiophiles but we have to make an exception here. The OPPO A9 2020 has dual speakers – one is located below the device and the other is the earpiece. Audio is surprisingly loud also there is noticeable distortions at max volume.

Based on the specs sheet, the 6.5 inch display does only have 720p resolution. That may disappoint some buyers but in fairness to OPPO, the display is quite decent. Colors are accurate and has adequate brightness outdoors. Unless you do pixel-peeping, you won’t notice any pixelation.

SOFTWARE

ColorOS 6 is big step up from the previous versions. It does bring new look and an app drawer which Android purist love. It is now more Android-like and less iOS-looking. ColorOS is also proven to be smooth over time even if the phone is more than a year old already. If you are coming from an older OPPO device, you will love this phone’s software. We could only wish OPPO could be diligent on upgrading their phones to the latest Android version.

Under the hood the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 665. This is an upgrade from the tried and tested Snapdragon 660. This phone is smooth and fast indeed. Gaming experience is also a joy since this chipset is tuned for gaming. There is also generous 8GB RAM which means it can accomodate more apps open in the background and multitasking wont be a problem here.

CAMERA

We got four cameras here – a 48MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP mono lens and 2MP depth sensor. The mono lens helps to get more detail for your phones. It is in tandem on your main 48MP lens. Overall photos are pretty good in good light. When there is less or no light, simply activate the Night Mode and there is a big improvement in photos. A 16MP selfie camera is located in a waterdrop notch on othe screen and it also takes decent photos.

Here are some of the sample photos and you’ll be the judge

CONNECTIVITY AND BATTERY

Qualcomm’s 4G modems are proven to be reliable and signal quality is very stable and we never encounted any problems with signal drops. Calls are clear with no issues 4G/LTE is also decent using our Smart SIM card.

The OPPO A9 2020 is hard to kill. We tried doing video loop test and we managed to get around 10 hours of screen on time and we still get around 18% battery left. It is safe to say that the phone is a solid two-day and a half device. Meaning you can charge the phone every other day or every three days on light usage.

VERDICT

The OPPO A9 2020 is truly a multimedia powerhouse. Great audio experience, exceptional battery life, large and decent display. Watching movies and playing games is such a joy because of these features. The cameras are very very decent which we consider it a bonus. Don’t get so disappointed with the 720p display. It is a decent screen.
