Build and Design

OPPO sticks to the Reno-like design on the OPPO A9 2020 which we like very much. The phone comes in two colors – Marina Green and Space Purple. We have the Space Purple here it reminds us of the OPPO R17 Pro we reviewed before. The quad camera at rear is a bit protruding but not enough to make phone wobble on a table. The heft is pretty evident because of the large 5,000 mAh battery. The phone is a bit large too because of the 6.5-inch display.

Speaking of the display, we have a 6.5-inch display which is an IPS panel. It also houses the 16MP selfie camera in a form of a waterdrop notch. We need to further test the display once we get more time with it.

One thing we also noticed is OPPO has finally ditched USB 2.0 for the first time and used USB Type C which is now the new standard of charging and file transfers. For the longest time, OPPO has been using USB 2.0 for midrange offerings. It is nice to see this change in an OPPO midrange smartphone.

Let’s go under the hood first. We have a Snapdragon 655 powering the device. This chipset is proven to be workhorse and also power efficient. Although we had limited time with it, we never encountered any lags or slowdowns. We are looking forward to test the phone’s overall performance once we get more time with it.

On the software side, the OPPO A9 2020 runs on ColorOS 6 which is on top of Android 9.0 Pie. One of our favorite ColorOS 6 feature is the inclusion of an app drawer. This makes the phone look more Android than iOS.

First Camera Samples

We managed to get some photos on the OPPO A9 2020. We have a 16MP selfie camera and a quad camera system at the rear – a 48MP main lens, an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP mono lens. We took photos on the main and ultrawide cameras plus a selfie and they appeared very good. All were taken in auto settings. Here, check out some of our sample photos.

First Impressions

We have to say that the OPPO A9 2020 is a pretty solid midrange offering from OPPO. The cameras have great potential and having a Snapdragon 665 under the hood is a big plus. You will know that you get a smooth performance out of this phone. The screen may only have HD resolution but it is a pretty solid display. There are still more cover for our full review so watch out for that.

The OPPO A9 2020 is now available for blind pre-order. Price remains to be unknown but you will get a FREE XSound Bluetooth Speaker when you pre-order. The device is set to launch in September 19 and expect the price and availability will be unveiled there.
