HARDWARE AND DESIGN
It is not actually surprising to see that the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 has great build quality. As always, we are very impressed with Huawei make their phones. The Chinese phone maker also guarantees the durability of its motorized pop up mechanism that houses the selfie camera.
Our Emerald Green unit is a head turner! There was one instance that one of our friends even asked what is the phone we are using and she loves the color. There is an audio jack and a dedicated microSD card apart from the dual SIM card slot.
We have a large 6.59-inch IPS LCD display here. We may probably be nitpicking but we still prefer an AMOLED display for the Y9 Prime 2019. An AMOLED panel will be perfect for a notchless display. Since it is IPS, colors are a little less saturated but nonetheless, the viewing experience is still good.
SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE
The phone currently runs on EMUI 9.0 and we believe it is scheduled to get EMUI 9.1 update which brings more features. Huawei’s custom skin on top of Android is not our favorite UI but not to the point that we need to download a third party launcher. Overall experience is generally okay. We think Huawei should really consider a major redesign on their UI just like Samsung did with OneUI.
Performance is another story. Under the hood is Huawei’s own Kirin 710 chipset powering it. Huawei’s Kirin chipsets are a bit behind the likes of Qualcomm in terms of horsepower but the company has packed the chipset with AI features for its camera and especially gaming. The chipset can run graphic intense games up to certain extent. We recommend to set the graphics to medium when gaming.
Huawei is known for its great cameras for its high end and midrange smartphones but not on their entry level ones. The company’s Y-series are entry level phones and the Y9 Prime 2019 is the most expensive of them. It costs Php 12,990 and despite being entry level, we expect a pretty decent camera here. Suprisingly, the camera system exceeds expectations.
CONNECTIVITY AND BATTERY
Here’s a trivia that might compel you to get this phone. Through excellent hardware and software optimization, Huawei smartphones gets the best WiFi network signal than any smartphone brand. This is probably due to Huawei expertise in making telecommunications equipment like cellsites and modems. As for the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, 4G/LTE is more stable which ever local network SIM you use. WiFi stability is also great.
Huawei’s software optimization also bring great battery life to the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019. On our video loop test using 4G/LTE and WiFi combined, we managed to get 8 hours of screen on time with 34% left in the tank. Pretty good battery life!
For Php 12,990, the Huawei Y9 Prime is a great phone for the daily grind. This phone has cool color options and great build quality especially that motorized pop up camera which Huawei guarantees its durability. We got pretty good cameras here and good battery life. We give the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 our #FTARecommended seal of approval.
