The Huawei Y5 2019 is the company’s latest entry-level smartphone that offers a super handy device with well-refined specifications for its price.
Just in case you are looking for a budget-friendly phone, you might want to read our review to see if this is really the one for you.
The Huawei Y5 2019 has an all-plastic unibody casing. There is a model with a faux-leather finish that adds a more premium look but ours comes in a regular midnight black color.
The gold ring around the rear camera module compliments really well against the dark back cover of the phone. Thanks to the matte-like finish, smudges are not becoming easily visible.
Looking at the front of the device, it has a 5.71-inch display with a dewdrop notch and relatively thick bezels specially on the top and bottom.
The right side of the phone houses the volume rocker and the power button which are very comfortable to press.
The micro-USB port, one microphone, and the loudspeaker are on the bottom part.
It has the tri-slot (microSD card + SIM1 + SIM2) tray is on the upper left side while the secondary microphone and audio jack port are on the top part of the phone.
Overall, the phone feels so handy thanks to its super compact body and rounded edges. It has a solid build quality with no loose and cracking parts.
As mentioned, the Y5 2019 has a 5.71-inch display with a 720p resolution. Like most entry-level smartphones, the bezels on this phone are thicker compared to the latest mid-range devices.
When it comes to the display itself, the colors are pretty accurate and the sharpness is still on point considering its display resolution. The brightness of the screen is also excellent and you can comfortably use it under direct sunlight.
The Huawei Y5 2019’s performance is what you can expect from an entry-level smartphone. With the MediaTek Helio A22 quad-core processor, regular activities such as using social media apps, internet surfing, and browsing around the UI of the device is still satisfying.
It was also equipped with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which is not different from most entry-level smartphones on this price-point. Despite the lack of a fingerprint scanner, the Y5 2019 supports Face Unlock which takes around 1-2 seconds to unlock the phone.
Here are sample benchmarks:
OS, Apps, and UI
The Y5 2019 is running on the latest Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9 which delivers system speed enhancements and an intelligent Phone Manager for an overall smoother experience.
Some of the UI elements that you can tweak with Android 9 Pie is the navigation and the notch area. By default, the navigation is set to the three-key navigation but you can also use the slide gestures and it will hide the navigation bar; adding more screen real estate and you’ll be able to use the phone with one-hand.
In case you don’t want to see the dewdrop notch, there is an option in the Setting to fill the upper portion of the display with a black bar to blend with the notch.
The Huawei Y5 2019 sports a 13MP rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a 5MP selfie camera. Daylight shots are pretty okay and night shots are still okay thanks to its large aperture opening but noises are also pretty visible since it has no dedicated night mode.
Selfies are also okay with the Y5 2019. Skin color looks so accurate and it can get really sharp photos on a well-lit environment.

Despite its super compact size, the Y5 2019 packs a 3,020 mAh battery. On normal usage, the device can last all throughout the day. It also comes with a 10W charger that can fill up the battery juice from 10%-100% in less than 2 hours.
The Huawei Y5 2019 is a pretty solid entry-level smartphone with a super-compact body and decent specification. We recommend you to find the one with a faux-leather coating if you want to have a more premium feel with a budget-friendly device. Overall, the bright display, decent selfie camera, and the all-day battery life are just some of the key features that we like about it.
