It was a rough few weeks for Huawei with US ban on the company to do business with American companies which includes Google and Microsoft. Many Huawei owners are worried as what will happen to their device once Huawei can’t monthly download security patches and major Android software updates. All is over after pressure from US allies and US President Trump lifted the ban.
Now, let’s move on and take a closer look at Huawei’s new midrange offering, the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019. This is the first Huawei phone to sport a pop up selfie camera which is becoming a trend lately to eliminate the notch problem. Let’s head on and unbox this!

Like any smartphone with a pop up selfie camera, you fill first notice the uninterrupted, no notch screen. Speaking of the screen, we have a large 6.59-inch display which is in full HD. We could wish Huawei opt for an AMOLED since you get a full viewing experience. But we do understand the option to use IPS to bring down cost.
As for the rest of the hardware, we have a headphone jack together USB Type C and single bottom speaker at the bottom. There is a power button and volume rocker at the left side while the SIM card/microSD card slot is a the top. Fingerprint scanner is located at the back.
Overall, we do love the the build quality. It is bit hefty probably to the motorized mechanism and the large 4,000 mAh battery. We do love this Emerald Green color which reminds us the color of Emerald City from the Wizard of Oz.
Currently, the phone is running EMUI 9.0 over Android 9.0 Pie. We believe that the phone is also planned for EMUI 9.1 update next month. So far, on our first 24 hours of use, the phone is snappy. We also installed some of our essential apps. We will download graphic intense games to further test the edurance of the chipset.
And speaking of the chipset, it is Huawei’s own Kirin 710F processor powering the device. It is paired with 4GB RAM which is enough for everyday multitasking. Its sad that Huawei did not allot a more roomier 6GB RAM here but we believe 4GB RAM is enough for the daily grind.
First Camera Samples
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 has a triple camera system at the back – a 16MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide camera and a 2MP depth sensor. Then there’s a 16MP motorized pop up camera. All photos were taken in auto mode so here are our first sample photos.
The overall build quality is what captured our first impressions of theHuawei Y9 Prime 2019. We also love this Emerald Green color. Our stand with moving parts like the pop up camera remains a concern but only time can tell when it comes to its durability. So far photos are very decent. We will reserve more of our judgement for our full review.
