OPPO Reno 10X Zoom Edition Review: Those Killer Cameras!

Competition among flagship smartphones are getting more intense every year just as the competition among entry level and mid range smartphones. In the Philippines, competing flagships are the following – Samsung Galaxy S10+, Huawei P30 Pro and the recently launched OnePlus 7 Pro. Now there is another phone joining the competition and that’s the OPPO Reno.

The OPPO Reno is the successor of the 2018 flagship, the OPPO Find X. It comes in two variants, the regular Reno and the Reno 10x Zoom Edition. What we have here is the Reno 10x Zoom Edition. If there is one thing that stands out immediately with the OPPO Reno is its design. We love how well crafted this phone is especially at the back. There is no camera bump! The camera is so integrated at the back. The phone, however is quite heavy and slippery. This is probably due to the big battery and the motorized front camera module plus the combination of glass and metal construction. Good thing OPPO included a case which has a nice faux leather feel.

The Reno 10x Zoom Edition has a larger 6.6-inch display as compared with the regular Reno has a smaller 6.4 inches. It an AMOLED panel and colors are vibrant and saturated. We love the unobstructed all screen, no notch, no punch hole display. Watching content on this phone is so enjoyable!

Audio quality is good. We have Dolby ATMOS for the dual speakers and audio output fairly decent. We could wish for more punch but overall audio is fine. We think the Galaxy S10+ has better sounding speakers.

If you like a phone with an app drawer, then the OPPO Reno can be on your list already. ColorOS 6 allows you to choose with the iOS-like set up with all apps on the home screen or an app drawer. Other than that, ColorOS 6 bring new features and major overhaul with its look. Its cleaner, still colorful and very smooth to use. We just notice some bloatware pre-installed which you can uninstall.

Underneath is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor powering the device. This variant comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Since it is a flagship, we never had problems with slowdowns and lag. High intense graphic games run smoothly here. The phone can also handle heavy multitasking with no sweat.

We have three rear cameras – a 48MP main lens, a 13MP periscope camera with up to 5x optical zoom and an 8MP ultrawide lens. Than we have a motorized pop 16MP selfie camera. Let’s talk first the photos taken at the rear cameras. You can actually do 5x optical zoom and 10x hybrid zoom. You can also do up to 60x digital zoom if you want to do spy mode. Actually, we don’t actually do much zooming and we prefer wide angle shots so we can squeeze in more subjects to the frame. But what stands out is the dedicated night mode and it drastically change your phones from normal mode. As for selfies, well, OPPO is know for taking really good selfies and it won’t disappoint.

Here, take some of our sample photos.

Wide ange -> 1x -> 2x -> 6x -> 10x -> 30x-> 60x zoom

Calls are clear with no issues. 4G/LTE internet speeds using our Smart SIM are within normal range. We did not encounter dropped calls and sudden drop in signal quality during our test period.

ColorOS battery optimization helps a lot with the strength of the battery apart that it is already large at 4,065 mAh. You can top up the juice faster with its 20W VOOC fast charge. We threw everything at it to test the battery – watching iWant, You Tube, Netflix plus making the phone a WiFi hotspot the whole day and it still had around 43% juice left. That is just so impressive!

We give our #FTARecommended seal of approval to the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom edition for its stunning design, great battery life and versatile camera system. We love how smooth ColorOS is. It is also a head turner with its elegant design especially that rear camera system being so flushed at the back. No camera humps! Keep in mind its cons too = its a bit heavy and bulky plus OPPO’s reputation of not updating its smartphones to the latest software. We hope OPPPO would update their phones to the latest Android version especially this phone since it is a flagship.
