HARDWARE

One thing that would attract you with the Huawei Y Max is the faux leather of the back with stitching that adds to its classy look. It feels so good in the hand too. It is a wise choice of material since the phone is very large and putting a glossy glass on it is very unwise. The faux leather also adds more grip especially for some folks with smaller hands but wants a big phone.

As for the display, we have a huge 7.12-inch display here. It is an iPS panel though we wish its an AMOLED for punchier colors. But nonetheless, its a pretty decent display at 1080p. We just find the colors a little dull and a bit flushed. But its large dispmay made us watch Netflix and IWant for hours. We watched the massacre of characters in March 28 episode of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano its feels like watching on a tablet.

We don’t usually talk about the audio quality of a device but we have to make an exception. The Huawei Y Max has dual stereo speakers being the earpiece also works as a speaker that works along with the bottom firing speaker. Audio quality is so good! You don’t need Bluetooth speakers for a perfect movie experience

SOFTWARE

The Y Max is running Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8.2 on top of it. We could wish this phone to be running on the latest Android version. But that’s already nitpicking already for our part. Overall performance was very smooth and no issues of lags and slowdowns. The big screen also means more enjoyable gaming experience. And speaking of gaming, we have a Snapdragon 660 underneath the hood. Graphic intense games will run smoothly here as long you set the graphics to medium.

CAMERA

We have a dual rear camera set up – a 16MP main sensor and a 2MP depsth sensor. It has AI screne recognition that automoatically adjust the settings depending on the lighting condition of your subject. At the front, there is an 8 megapixel camera. The photos we took are generally ok, They are not outstanding but very decent. It does lack some color and vibrancy though.

Here are some of the sample photos:

BATTERY AND CONNECTIVITY

Having a large 5,000 mAh battery means more time for Netflix! On our battery drain tests, we watched two Netflix movies and a noontime show on IWant and we managed to get 7 hours of screen on time with 44% nattery left in the tank. On our days with light usage, we manage to get two full days which is very impressive.

WiFi and 4G/LTE is very fast as usual. We used our Smart SIM here and calls are clear with no issues. Fingerprint scanner also works well.

VERDICT

The Huawei Y Max is our favorite Netflix companion sa far especially when we kill time in horrendous traffic along Edsa. Long battery life, great build quality, powerful processor, nice-looking faux leather design and that huge screen is what will compel you to get the Huawei & Max.

Look somewhere else if you are looking for a killer camera phone bacause it it not the best camera phone on it segment. We suggest the Vivo V11 Pro and OPPO F11 Pro for thiose looking for a good camera phone. if you want a smaller display, we suggest you take a look at the Huawei P30 Lite which is now available for pre-order (as of this writing).
