How can you go big when it comes to screen real estate? Smartphones are getting bigger and bigger this year. About two years ago, a 5.5-inch display is already considered big. Now, a 5.8-inch display feels very small. But what can you consider a big phone nowadays?
And then there’s the Huawei Y Max. The has a large 7.12-inch display and nope, this is not a tablet. It is indeed a normal smartphone. We are doing our first impressions a little different this time. We will discuss the 5 features we like about the Huawei Y Max! Read on.

1. That big screen
The 7.12-inch can be a mixed bag for many smartphone buyers. A big screen can be heaven for multimedia users and gamers but can be cumbersome for some due to its sheer size. For us, it is a big two thumbs up!
We are heavy multimedia users because we do watch Netflix, IWant, and You Tube everyday and a big screen means more enjoyable experience. A big screen means you can see you social media news feed better or less mistakes when texting. Good thing Huawei made the screen to Full HD which means it is quite sharp for movie and TV streaming.
2. Big battery
Well, big screen means big battery and we have a 5,000 mAh here. On our initial battery test, we managed to watch a 3-hour noontime via livestreaming and a two-hour movie on Netflix on a single charge with 43% left to spare. We will do more testing for our review.
3. Nice design
We are actually so fed up reviewing phones with shiny finishes that attracts fingerprints and scratches. But on the Huawei Y Max, we have a faux leather with stitching at the back. It feels like touching leather though we know it is not real leather, it feels so good to hold nonetheless. The size is also perfect for those who have big hands like ours. Keep in mind though that it is impossible to use it with one hand.
4. More storage
Huawei opted to put a large 128GB of internal storage in this device. This means you can store more photos, videos and even movies (just the legal downloads please, hehe). You also have additional microSD card expansion for up to 256GB as well.
5. Competitive pricing
For a smartphone powered by Snapdragon 660, beefy 128GB internal storage, large 7.12-inch display, huge 5,000 mAh battery, this phone is priced at Php 16,990. For us this is fairly decent considering the amount of features you get.
First Camera Samples
The phone has a 16MP main sensor and a 2 MP depth sensor at the back and an 8MP selfie camera. We took some of our first sample photos and we will reserve judgement on our full review. For now, you can judge our first photos all taken in auto settings.
This is the only smartphone that does not try to be a tablet as it holds it own category. The Huawei Y Max will appeal to people who really like a phone with big screen. It is not tablet trying to be a phone. It is a phone.
If you can’t wait for our full review and wanting a big phone, this is the only phone above the 7-inch category and we give our big two thumbs up of recommendation. 🙂
