Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Review – The Triple Camera Advantage

Having more cameras on a smartphone is the hame of the game this year. From flagships to midrange phones, brands has been putting three cameras at the rear. Samsung is the first to introduce a triple camera system in a midrange phone through the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017). How was the experience? Read on.

Actually there is nothing new with phone’s design. It is the same Samsung design cues we see on their phones. But take a look closer and you will see the difference. The triple camera layout at the back is reminiscent of Xiaomi and Vivo while the this attractive bluish purple color reminds us of Huawei phones.

Don’t be fooled by the colorful shiny material at the back. It is not glass but polycarbonate (plastic). Prefer it over glass as it is more durable. No water and dust resistance here like its more expensive siblings and no USB Type C. Just keep that in mind.

Of course this is a Samsung phone so expect its on display tech here. We have a 6-inch AMOLeD display with full HD resolution. As expected, it is bright and saturated. Though it is not as mind blowingly beautiful like the Galaxy S9 but it is sunlight legible and has great viewing angles. Always On display is also present on this phone too!

Samsung’s Experience UI 9 is set be replaced by One UI this January 2019. Though we are not sure if the Galaxy A7 will be updated to the new UI and the new Android version, we do love Samsung’s current Experience 9 user interface. There are less bloatware and redundant apps. It is also simple, clean and easy to understand. It is a very familiar experience so you won’t get any problems using it.

Under the hood we have Samsung’s Exynos 7885 processor. It is a bit old when comparing it to Mediatek’s Helio P60 and Qualcomm’s mid range chipsets. It gets the job done like multitasking and gaming. High graphic games should be set to low to enjoy seamless gaming.

The juicy part of this review is the triple camera system. We have 24 megapixel main sensor, an 8 megapixel wide angle camera and 5 megapixel depth sensor for portrait shots. Selfie lovers will love the 24 megapixel front camera. We do have mix feelings with the cameras. Based on the photos we took, it seems a bit inconsistent. Sometimes we get good photos, sometimes we don’t. We also tend to love our photos taken with the wide angle camera as well.

Here are some of our sample photos.

Samsung has improved a lot when it comes to cellular and WiFi connectivity. It was evident on other Samsung phones as well. Using our Smart SIM, we managed to get stellar speed tests compared to other phones with the same carrier network and location. Same thing with WiFi connectivity too. Calls are clear with no issues. As for the fingerprint scanner, it is located at the side. The power button also serves as the fingerprint scanner, It is not as fast as Huawei’s phones though not terribly slow.

We must say the battery life on this thing is above average. It is not as stellar as Galaxy Note 9. But that phone has a more powerful chipset and a bigger screen that sips more battery. We managed to get 5 hours of screen on time and a solid whole day of use. Not bad indeed!

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is facing some tough competition with the likes of the OPPO F9, Vivo V11 and Huawei Nova 3i. These phones have better performing chipsets and a more attractive design too. But what will make buy the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)? Of course that Samsung badge, that triple camera system, that vibrant AMOLED display and a nice, clean software experience. Oh! This phone has NO NOTCH. Yey to that!
