Now that the ASUS Zenfone 5 and the OPPO F9 are almost on the same price now, let’s see which one is the best for your lifestyle if you are more into the camera of a smartphone.
Just a quick recap, the ASUS Zenfone 5 has a dual rear camera setup composed of a 12MP (f/1.8 aperture) + an 8MP (f/2.0 aperture). It also supports PDAF, 4-axis OIS, and has a Dual-LED dual-tone flash. On the front, it has an 8MP (f/2.0 aperture) with gyro-EIS support.
While the OPPO F9 also has a dual rear camera setup equipped with 16MP (f/1.8 aperture) PDAF + a 2MP (f/2.4 aperture) depth sensor and a LED flash. On the front, it has a 25MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture.
Note: The first photo will be the one from ASUS Zenfone 5 and the second photo will be the one from the OPPO F9.
ASUS Zenfone 5 vs OPPO F9 | Camera Comparison
Outdoor shots in daylight. These photos are taken at the Greenbelt’s garden. Both devices have AI scene recognition and both are in Auto-HDR mode. The Zenfone 5 has quickly recognized that the scene has something to do with greenery by showing the leaf icon while the OPPO F9 automatically witch to HRD mode. Because of that, the Zenfone 5 has better green color while the OPPO F9 adds a little bit of brightness to dark areas (on carabaws) to compensate with the HDR mode.
Close-up shots. A flower is one of the best subject to test the sharpness and color accuracy of a phone’s camera. On these two photos, the Zenfone 5 uses it AI and identified the subject as a flower. It has a better sharpness to the flower as compared to the other photo. The photo from the OPPO F9 has a brighter exposure. It also has a better dynamic range but the background blur adds dark shadow around the edges which is not visible on the Zenfone 5 photo.
Wide-angle vs Vivid Mode. The Zenfone 5 and the OPPO F9 have different features. The Zenfone 5 has a wide-angle lens while the OPPO F9 has a Vivid mode that pops-up the colors on the photo.
HDR – High Dynamic Range. From Auto-HDR, we turned ON the HDR Mode on both devices to see which one is better in balancing the exposure between over exposed and under-exposed areas. With this shots, we think both devices performed pretty well. They have managed to maintain the greenness of the plants while showing the details on the cloudy sky.
Indoor shots (good lighting). Looking at these photos, the photo on the right which comes from the OPPO F9 has the more striking photo with better contrast and vibrant colors. Both have good sharpness and details.
Night shots (outdoor). We think the Zenfone 5 has the advantage here. Even though both have f/1.8 aperture on their main camera, the Zenfone 5 has a sharper photo here with better contrast. The OPPO F9 was trying to minimized the noises which results to a smoother photo light bleeding on the store’s signage.
Indoor shots (slightly low-light). The photos from the OPPO F9 looks better in the eyes here. Colors are more vibrant and it has a better contrast. While the photos from the Zenfone 5 might look pale, the sharpness is still on point as compared to the one from the F9 that was smoothed to reduce the noises.
Food shots. One thing we have noticed here is the color temperature. Both devices can easily recognize that food scene. The Zenfone 5 maintains the natural color while the OPPO F9 seems to adds a warmer color temperature when taking pictures of food. Both have same sharpness so it depends on you which one you prefer the most.
Taking picture of people. The Zenfone 5 captures a more natural photo here at compared to the one from the F9 which automatically adds beautification effect on the subject. On the second set of photos, the Zenfone 5 activated the HDR mode while the F9 detects a person and adds beauty effect instead of balancing the exposure.
Depth Effect vs Portrait Mode. The Zenfone 5 has a Depth Effect mode which adds blur effect on the background of your subject. It also has an adjustable aperture setting that controls the amount of blurriness in your shot. On the OPPO F9, it has a Portrait mode with the same concept of adding artificial blur effect. It doesn’t have an adjustable aperture value but it has different lighting effect that you can add in your photo.
Looking at the photos above, the Zenfone 5 has a more natural-looking photo while the F9 adds beautification effect on its photo. Both have good edge detection and bokeh implementation.
Using HDR with a person as a subject. The Zenfone 5 has a better HDR here. Look at the plants behind the subject on the first 2 photos; the one from the Zenfone 5 has greener colors as compared to the other photo. On the next photos, look at the sun light on the girl’s dress; the Zenfone 5 has managed to lessen the exposure and balance the overall lighting on the photo.
Outdoor selfie (good lighting). The Zenfone 5 has the better contrast and sharper output here. We turned off the AI Beautification on the F9 to be fair. But looking on its photo, it has a slightly over-exposed image and it lacks in contrast.
Indoor selfie. The Zenfone 5 has the warmer photo here as compared to the cooler temperature on the OPPO F9. The 25MP of the OPPO F9 is a sure win here versus the 8MP on the ASUS Zenfone 5. The F9 has a sharper image but one from is still acceptable and details are still clear.
Front camera features. The ASUS Zenfone 5 only has Portrait mode, Beauty mode, Selfie Panorama, and GIF animation while the OPPO F9 has a lot of features like Portrait mode, Super Vivid mode, AI Beauty mode, Time-lapse, Stickers, and Panorama.
