Huawei Mate 20 Pro Unboxing and First Impressions

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei Philippines has officially launched their newest flagship devices here in the country – the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro.

Luckily, we had the chance to get a review unit of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. So join us in our unboxing and figure out what is our frist impression about this device.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro: What’s in the box?

  • Mate 20 Pro unit
  • 40W wall adaptop
  • data / charging cable
  • USB Type-C earphone
  • jelly case
  • USB Type-C adaptop to 3.5mm headphone jack
  • SIM ejector tool
  • manual

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is now in a slimmer form-factor as compared to the past Mate 10 series. You can actually compose messages using only one hand. The feel when you hold the device is like holding a Samsung S9 Plus because of the full glass body and the edge-to-edge display on the side.

Turning the device on the back is what sets it apart from the others. The one that we have has a Twilight color which Huawei pioneered on their P20 series and of course the matrix camera design that is so unique and no other smartphone here in the country has that design.

The Mate 20 Pro’s display looks pretty tall compared to the fatty display on the Mate 10. It now uses an AMOLED technology just like the one on the Mate 10 Pro last year.

Compared to the Mate 20, the Mate 20 Pro has a bigger notch that houses multiple sensors for a more secure Face ID Unlock just like on the iPhone X.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box with the latest EMUI 9.0. The whole software experience is pretty good. We have been using Huawei devices for the past few years and we have been familiarized with its customized User Interface.

One of the new features that we like is the Navigation Gestures that now removed the Navigation bar on the bottom and uses different swiping gestures to navigate the phone.

Huawei is very proud of their new HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor that they integrate on the Mate 20 series.

As we are now using the device for a week since we had it, the overall experience is so smooth. Apps are loading too quickly, scrolling is so fast, and of course multi-tasking has even better.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro also tops the AnTuTu Benchmark when we test it with the Performance Mode ON. Here are some of the benchmark screenshots:

The camera part is what excites us the most about the Mate 20 Pro. We actually expect it to have 4 cameras on the back but ends up on a triple rear camera system just like the P20 Pro. Good thing, it has different lens composition now; it has a 40MP main sensor, 20MP ultra wide angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens, with micro mode support.

So far, we are enjoying the Mate 20 Pro camera because of the many new features that it can offer. Here are some sample pictures that we have taken:

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is one of the most jam-packed flagship smartphone released here in the country this year. For the price of P49,990.00, we think this is just reasonable because of the top of the line specifications that it has.

If you are looking for a smartphone with powerful performance and very versatile camera specially on low-light, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro might be the one for you.

This is just the beginning and there are a lot of features to explore on this device. Watch out for our full review!
