HARDWARE AND DESIGN
The ASUS Zenbook Pro (UX550VE) has a solid-aluminum body featuring a diamond-cut edges and the iconic Zen-inspired spun-metal finish on the lid with the silver ASUS logo on the center.
It has two sophisticated color schemes; the Royal Blue and the Matte Black color, that let you match it in your preferred style.
We also like the silver lining on the edges of its body. It adds a more premium and elegant look to the device as it also serves as a border-line for the screen panel and the laptop’s body when the lids are closed.
One thing we have noticed on this device is the lack of air vents. This opening underneath the display hinge is the only way for the laptop to disperse heat. Although the device stays cool on normal usage like typing and browsing, it will all change when you do some renderings and playing heavy games.
When it comes to ports, the Zenbook Pro 2017 has a two USB Type-A (3.0 Gen 1), one microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack port on the right side.
We are quite sad with the microSD card port choice considering that professionals are more into a full-size SD card (the one they use on their SLR and DSLR).
On the left side, it has the charging port, the HDMI port, and two USB Type-A ports which are also thunderbolt enabled.
The laptop also has light indicators in-front, under the touchpad.
It has a full-size keyboard with back-lighting. The ZenBook Pro offers impressive 1.5mm key travel, making typing more comfortable and more accurate.
It also has a Windows precision touchpad that’s is very comfortable, accurate, and has a smooth control. The touchpad features palm-rejection technology, supports multi-touch gestures and handwriting.
The Zenbook Pro has a Full HD display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The colors are good thanks to ASUS Spledid technology. The ultra-wide 100% sRGB and 72% NTSC color gamut of the display produces incredibly natural-looking colors, and 178° wide-view technology ensures a perfect picture even at acute viewing angles.
It has a NanoEdge technology which results to a slimmer bezels and a better viewing experience. With this, the 15.6-inch display has perfectly fit into a frame size of a 14-inch. Cool right?
With its internal specifications, the Zenbook Pro is not just for professional usage. The combination of the Intel Core i7 and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050Ti with 16GB of 2400MHz DDR4 RAM makes it also capable of running heavy games and some serious video renderings. The SSD storage also results to an average of 10 seconds boot-time and you are good to fully use the device.
The Zenbook Pro can run heavy games on medium to high settings on ease.
With the built-in gaming toolbar, you can turn ON the Gaming Mode to boost the performance of the laptop. You can also take screenshots and streaming while playing.
The good display also results to a better viewing experience when watching videos. The colors are very accurate, the blacks remain dark, and the viewing angles are good.
The ASUS Zenbook Pro 2017 has a Quad speaker system certified by Harman Kardon. It has two down-firing speakers on the bottom and two speakers on the top along with the keyboard.
One thing we can guarantee you guys, the speakers on this laptop are one of the best thing we have tried. The sound it produce is so loud that is can be hear on the next room even on 50% volume. The lows, mids, and highs are also evident even on maximum volume which will surely love by audiophiles.
On the camera side, it only has a VGA camera which captures below average images and videos. If you really want this device and you are more into video chat, we recommend you to try it first before buying.
Aside from the port selections, the Zenbook Pro also supports the ASUS Pen since it has a touch screen display. And the integrated dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi supports speeds that are up to 6x faster than 802.11n*. Also keep in mind the two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 ports which allows you to do a data transfer on the speed of up to 40Gbps and supports 4K UHD display.
*The variant of the Zenbook Pro that we have doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner but if you like to have an additional security measure on your device, you can choose from its other variants.
ZenBook Pro uses a high-capacity 73Wh lithium-polymer battery and clever ASUS thermal engineering.
We are also happy with the battery life of the Zenbook Pro because it can last on an average of 8 hours of light-weight use like for example typing and internet browsing on a coffee shop. While it can last for an average of 4 hours of watching movies on a 50% display brightness.
It includes fast-charge technology that lets you recharge the ZenBook Pro from 10% to 100% in just 2 hours.
The ASUS Zenbook Pro (UX550VE) is a device crafted for professional who want a sophisticated, stylish, and slim device equipped with heavy-duty specifications. But it somehow exceed its limitation for it can also be used for heavy gaming and serious video rendering because of the Intel i7 processor, GTX1050Ti dedicated graphics, PCIe SSD storage, and the 16GB of DDR4 RAM. Although it has some flaws like the lack of air vents, microSD card port instead of a full-size SD card, and below-average camera.
During our time of reviewing the Zenbook Pro, we doesn’t really encounter any other issues except for those we have mentioned above. We are able to do the tasks that we have to do with ease and comfort. With this, we are giving our #FTASealOfRecommendation for the ASUS Zenbook Pro (UX550VE) for those who are looking for a laptop that you can carry in your backpack, a long lasting battery life, and a performance that can also do serious stuff. If you have the money, then we advise you to consider this device on you list.
