Looking the Vivo X21 for the first time, it truly looks and feels a flagship, The chassis is made up of glass and the frame is metal. There’s some heft to it but it does not feel heavy to carry around. Since it is glass expect fingerprints and smudge will be plaguing your phone. Aside from that, because of the glass still, the phone wanders off on a perfectly leveled surface a lot causing it sometime to fall over.  Lucky for us, our unit didn’t sustain major scratches and dents.

Ports and buttons:

  • Top – 3.5mm audio jack and noise cancelling micrphone
  • Bottom – SIM card/microSD tray, USB charging port, speaker, microphone
  • Left – nothing
  • Right – Power button and volume rockers
  • Back – Dual cameras and flash
  • Front – 6.3-inch display with on-screen fingerprint scanner, sensors, selfie camera, and earpiece

Yes fellow techies, you read it right. The fingerprint scanner is already on the screen and there’s no dedicated fingerprint scanner anymore. That tech was first developed by Vivo earlier this year through Vivo’s APEX concept smartphone.  back in CES 2018. The in-display fingerprint scanner works very well. We just noticed it is not as fast as the conventional ones. It has a second or two delay. For us its understandable and this can be improved through a software update. But we really commend Vivo for this innovation.

The Vivo X21 has a long 6.3-inch 19:9 display. It is very decent, withstanding the harsh sunlight. It is very useful outdoors with less reflection. Auto brightness works very well too. As for the notch, we still hate it. But you can tweak the apps you use to hide the annoying notch. That can be found in the settings.

Just like any other Chinese-made smartphone, the Vivo X21 has a thick layer of skin called FuntouchOS. For those who have used a Vivo smartphone before, this is a familiar territory.  It is fast and fluid and based on our two-week review, we never had lags. That is because the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset paired with 6GB RAM. This is actually great for gaming. Such games  like PUBG Mobile works very well here.

For the cameras, we have a dual rear set up being the second 5 megapixel camera takes depth of field for bokeh effects. Photos taken from the 12 and 5 MP combo looks great and , good color saturation, dynamic range is on point and bokeh effects are good.

Battery is above average. We mostly get around 9 hours of mixed moderate to heavy use with 25% left in the tank. On our heavy use, we do a lot of PUBG, Netflix, You Tube, I Want TV and social media. You can also get around 2 days of light to moderate use here.

That in-display fingerprint scanner is a nice new feature. We believe there’s still room for improvement if you find the 2 second delay annoying, the face unlock works very well and fast. You are getting a true flagship feel with its glass and metal combo though very slippery, Vivo has bundled a case for your phone’s protection. It has great cameras and we do love the adjustable bokeh effects. We wish we could have more time with the device but if you are out for a new phone, this one should be on the list.
