Competition in the midrange smartphone market has been intense when Chinese brands entered the scene with their jaw dropping prices. Among the wide range of Chinese smartphones out there, Taiwanese brand ASUS did make a big comeback with the new ASUS Zenfone 5 line up.

ASUS has put so much effort on improving their camera tech and it paid off with the ASUS Zenfone 5. It is by far, the best camera we’ve seen on a Zenfone. It can compete with the likes of OPPO F7 or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 when taking their shots side by side. But what made it standout is the Zenfone 5 has Optical Image Stabilization and Night HDR, features that is not present among the competition. We also love the Zenfone 5’s camera set up – a normal lens and a wide angle lens. Taking those breathtaking sceneries is possible with that 120-degree wide angle lens.

Here are some of our sample photos:

One of the reasons why we awarded the #FTARecommended seal to the ASUS Zenfone 5 is because of the premium build. It is the only phone at the price point that is made of glass and metal. Also, despite the choice of materials, the Zenfone 5 is surprisingly light. Not plasticky light. Just the right heft, we might say. Though it is a bit slippery, we still decided not to use a case because we really want to admire the phone’s glossy back and its sunburst patterned design when light strikes on it.

AI (artificial intelligence) is basically a norm feature now for 2018. Though the AI on phones will not actually turn against you like what machines did on the Terminator movies, it it intelligent enough to know how you use your phone. AI is present in the cameras which automatically adjusts the settings to get the best photo for you through AI Scene Detection and AI Photo Learning. AI is also in the software as it learns how you use your phone. It time, it respond to you more efficiently as it learns.

Smartphone buyers have become smarter over the years. Buying a smartphone is also considered an investment. People want to know if a phone can be used in a span of two years. Based on track record, ASUS is consistent on software updates. Though like any other smartphone OEM with a skin on top of Android, it is not as timely as those who owns Google’s Pixel smartphones and Nokia’s current Android phones. It may be a bit delayed but you will surely get those security patches and major OS update. Also, on the hardware, we are pretty confident with the Zenfone 5 since ASUS is known for making rock solid phones just like their best laptops.

In the past Zenfones we’ve reviewed, we never praised the display. Well, it is not bad but there’s nothing really special about it. The Zenfone 5 is the first Zenfone we’ve tested with an amazing display. It is completely usable under direct sunlight and has good color saturation with a bit tad warmer tone.

Indeed the ASUS Zenfone 5  is not the cheapest among the competition – P19,995. But the set of features it offers is more than enough to compensate for the price.  It is truly a phone worth getting and keeping for the long term.
