ASUS Zenfone 5 Unboxing and First Impressions

ASUS Philippines has finally made the new ASUS Zenfone 5 series official a few days ago and people have been waiting for the most important information of the series – the price. We were actually jumping for joy when we found out the price of the Zenfone 5 – P19,995. That price is just right for the specs.

Over a month ago, we were able to play around with the first batch of ASUS Zenfone 5 units that arrived in the Philippines, Though not the final product yet that time, We had an idea of what’s like  if the final retail unit comes.

Upon opening the box, we were greeted with a gorgeous, shiny ASUS Zenfone 5 in black. Nothing has change on its looks when we first saw it earlier this year. We do love ASUS’ own design touch like the circular sunburst-like effect of the glass back. We love looking at it when struck by light. It does, however, catches so many fingerprints.

Ports and buttons:

  • Top – noise cancelling microphone and antenna bands
  • Bottom – speaker, USB Type C port, 3.5mm audio jack, microphone
  • Left – SIM card tray
  • Right – Volume rockers and power button
  • Back – dual cameras with flash
  • Front – 8.2-inch display, sensors, front camera, earpiece

We have a gorgeous 6.2-inch display here and this is probably the nicest display ASUS had. It is an IPS panel with a full HD display. And yes, it has a notch which is now becoming familiar with Android phones of 2018. Honestly, we are not fans of the notch but let’s see if we get used to it especially we also have the Vivo V9 and OPPO F7 on hand.

The Zenfone 5 has a 12 megapixel main camera and another 8 megapixel wide angle lens at the rear. We rarely see a second lens for wide angle and the only phone we know who has the same set up is the LG G6 which is a year old now. There is another 8 megapixel camera for selfies. The cameras seem to take very decent photos but we will reserve much of our verdict on our full review.   For now, here are some of our first sample photos taken from those three cameras.

The biggest change here is ASUS has trimmed much of their bloatware. So far, the Zenfone 5 uses Google apps as default like the calendar, SMS app and Chrome as the default browser. There are still some ASUS apps but most of them we find useful.

We are very impressed on how ASUS was able to price the ASUS Zenfone 5 and we think it is just right for the specs. We are pretty sure Zenfans will love this phone very much! Nice hardware, great price and decent cameras – these are the things we can say about the new Zenfone 5. More to review peeps! We will get back to you after two weeks.
