Huawei’s President for Consumer Business Software Dr. Wang Chenglu confirmed that they will roll out the much awaited Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Mate 9 and P10 series.
Dr. Wang said that the update will be distributed within 3 to 4 weeks of the Mate 10’s release. With that projection, Huawei Mate 9 users can expect to receive the update by the end of 2017.
For the Huawei P10 series, there was no time frame given. However, Huawei assured that P10 owners need not fret since they are going to get their updates in the near future.
This developments are in line with Huawei’s effort to roll out security updates more regularly. They are aiming to release security patches on a monthly basis.
However, this is a huge project to undertake and Dr. Wang wanted to emphasize that they are aiming to do this but is not promising anything.
He also shared that they are already working with Android P. This time, along with the usual new bells and whistles that come with new Android versions, they are also working on better AI-integration with Android P.
These are exciting news since Android updates are, more often than not, on a slow side when it comes to different smartphone manufacturers. If Huawei will be able to take the first step and provide monthly security updates then they can open the gates for other manufacturers as well.
