Cloudfone Excite Prime 2 Review: More From the Excitement

When you have P10,000 and up to spend on a smartphone, it probably will be an exciting experience. A sea of OPPOs, Vivos and Huaweis will be there for your budget – great processors, great camera experience and great hardware. But what if you only have around P6,000 for a new phone? Can you get the same smooth experience, great camera and hardware.

Cloudfone says YES. So here’s the Cloudfone Excite Prime 2. The first generation Excite Prime was a good phone but it is missing some key features that is already standard today. With the Cloudfone Excite Prime 2, this is going to be an exciting review!

Cloudfone Excite Prime 2:

  • 1.3GHz quad core Mediatek MT6737 processor
  • Mali T720 graphics
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB internal storage expandable via microSD
  • 5.5-inch HD IPS LCD display (1280 x 720 pixels)
  • 13 megapixel Sony IMX135 camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 8 megapixel front facing camera with LED flash
  • Dual SIM, Dual Standby
  • 4G/LTE (with 700mHz LTE band), WiFi, Bluetooth
  • GPS, A-GPS
  • 3,000 mAh battery
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Price: P5,990
  • Status: Available at Cloudfone stores and kiosks

We discussed most of the phone’s aesthetics on our unboxing and first impressions. Overall, its a solid phone. It feels like a unibody design but it is not. The back is removable which reveals the SIM card trays and microSD card. There are few phones nowadays with this feature. We could only wish to cut some bezels at the top and bottom since there are no capacitive buttons but that is just us.

Nice! A removable back!

The 5.5-inch display does give out punchy colors. It is perfect for watching multimedia content and playing games. Sunlight legibility is also tolerable under direct sunlight. Auto brightness works just fine.

Cloudfone opted for the older version look of the UI rather with an app tray button than the newer version with a slide up animation you see on phones running pure Android 7.0 Nougat. It is very smooth overall thanks to its 3GB RAM allocation for open and running apps.

We are pleased to report that NBA 2k17 works well here as long as you tweak some settings. The Mediatek MT6737 processor handles multi tasking very well too.

Remember, the MT6737 has limits so don’t push it so hard. If you leave 3 graphic intense games in the background, you’ll notice lags already. Good thing Cloudfone has Clean Master pre-installed. You can clean unnecessary files, cache and unwanted files quickly.

Antutu Benchmark score

The main highlight of this phone is, of course, the camera. Cloudfone wants you have the same experience just like the same phone priced above 10k. It has professional mode that can tweak white balance, ISO, sharpness, etc.

Photos taken from the 13 megapixel camera are fairly good, much better than smartphones of the same price. It is not the level of quality say like Samsung Galaxy S8 or Huawei P10 but definitely better than the OPPO Y55s.

Here, check out our photos and selfies.

Speed test using Globe LTE

4G/LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth are standard. It lacks a fingerprint scanner though the we understand because of the price. But the juicy part of it is the Cloudfone Excite Prime is capable of getting 700MHz LTE band signal, the fastest LTE band in the Philippines. So whether using Smart or Globe, you will surely get reliable LTE speeds.

Calls are clear with no issues and WiFi reception is exceptional. We rarely get signal drops whenever making network calls and overall, network signal has been very steady.

It is safe to say that the 3,000 mAh battery is adequate. We managed to get around 9 hours of mixed moderate to heavy use and more than 12 hours of light to moderate use.

Our battery tests include hours of video loop via IWant TV, Netflix, iFlix and You Tube, network calls, Viber calls with WiFi and LTE signal turned on.

No need to fret if you only have 6k budget because the Cloudfone Excite Prime 2 is here. Great hardware, amazing camera, pure android experience and decent battery life. We strongly recommend the Excite Prime for this budget range. Now, you don’t need to wait to get the features you need on a smartphone, it is all here for only P5,999.
