Samsung is still on top despite intense competition with OPPO, Vivo and Huawei in the mid range smartphone market. In order to maintain that momentum, Samsung recently announced the Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro, an upgrade from the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime that has been one 2016’s best selling smartphones.

Samsung focused all their tech in the camera. Even marketing is centered on the cameras with its “Capture The Night” campaign. The company highlights the phone’s capability to take great photos in low light situations. So let’s dig deeper if this is the right phone for you.

Samsung some tweaking with the design to make it different from its competitors and the previous model. One notable change are the antenna bands. We find it refreshing though it didn’t stand out with our black model here, it will definitely make a good statement when you get the silver variant.

At 181 grams, it is a bit hefty but its understandable because of its 3,600 mAh battery which a very decent size power pack and its metal shell. It is still manageable to hold with one hand despite of its thickness thanks to the curves on the side.

Of course it is a Samsung so it has a color saturated Super AMOLED display. Brightness output is decent and it is very manageable under direct snnlight. We also love the addition of Samsung’s signature Always On display which shows the time, date, battery percentage, missed calls and other notifications.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro is powered by the company’s home brewed Exynos chipset. Overall performance has been fantastic. It handles graphic intense games well but you will see some slowdown when pushing the chipset too hard. Normal games are handled very well so if you are fans of Ever Wing, this game will ran very well on it.

Samsung has adopted Android’s new look on Android 7.o Nougat that ditches the app tray icon and opted for a slide up animation revealing all your apps. Samsung’s new UI feels like vanilla android with Samsung still changing the look of the icons.

Most of Samsung’s marketing efforts are on the phone’s 13 megapixel cameras which is found at the front and back. The 13 megapixel shooter at the back has f/1.7 aperture and f/1.9 aperture for the selfie one. This means both cameras are capable to taking great photos in low light. Please check out some of our sample photos.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro has all the necessary connectivity options available – 4G/LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, Fingerprint Scanner. The redesigned antenna bands helped decrease the incidents of signal drops when you are phone call. There are very rare incidents of 4G/LTE signal drops too with our Globe SIM. Calls are clear with no issues.

Thankfully, Samsung did include a decent sized 3,600 mAh battery on this device. Battery was indeed better than any phone with 3,000 mAh pack. We lasted around 14 hours of mixed moderate to heavy use. We even achieved 2 solid days of light to moderate use – that includes only social media, few calls, and camera use with 4G/LTE turned on all the time.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro has indeed captured our hearts with its exceptional night photography. Well it is not perfect but we are overall happy with the photos we took. Beyond the camera, the device itself is a good phone overall – great build quality, refreshing look, great battery life, and decent display.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro is facing competition against the OPPO F3, Huawei GR5 2017, Nokia 6, and Vivo V5s. Click the link to check out our reviews.
