Villar Group Entering PH Telecoms Business, Wants to Break Existing “Duopoly”

We must admit, the existing “duopoly” of our local telecom industry really sucks. Though both Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Company (PLDT) and rival Globe Telecom are continuously improving their services, many Filipinos are longing for a third option – new telecom that can offer something different to consumers.

Well its seems like our prayers has been answered! Streamtech Systems Technologies has applied for a franchise in Congress to construct, install, operate and maintain a telecommunication infrastructure throughout the country.  The company is owned by the Villar Group of Senator Manny Villar, owner of Vista Land and Landscapes Inc.

We all know how big the Villars are when it comes to real estate from the malls and residential condominiums and subdivisions they’ve built.

The House Bill 3118 (the application of Streamtech for a telecom franchise) is currently pending in the House of Representatives.

If this pushes through, Streamtech should wow Filipino subscribers by offering something new and affordable to the table. Sun Cellular did the same back in 2004 when it offered “unlimited calls and texts” Sun to Sun. It went so popular that Sun’s subscribers ballooned and that forced PLDT’s Smart and Globe Telecom to follow. Sun Cellular is now part of the PLDT Group.
