Cloudfone Thrill 500X Spotify Edition Review: Music Overload

Cloudfone surprised us when it announced tons of smartphones under its own brand and its mother company, Cellprime Distribution Corporation brought into their family Gionee and Hyundai (yes, they make smartphones too). We are thrilled to review all of these smartphones and now we have the Spotify Edition Cloudfone Thrill 500X . The folks at Cloudfone sort of repackaged this model launched in 2014 and made it a music centric device. We’ve tested this smartphone for a week and here’s our review.

We know that this is an old model but for some reason, it gave us this feel that something has changed. We’ve always admired Cloudfone for its improved build quality and nothing has changed here. The Cloudfone Thrill 500X is a solid phone that can withstand a drop. Because of that large battery inside, the phone is noticeably thicker and heavier than usual. It is a trade off you have weigh. If you don’t mind the added thickness and industrial design in favor for a longer lasting battery then please do so buy one. More on that battery later on the review.

Since this is a music centric device we have to review the accessories included with the device. Please click the link above to see our unboxing and check out what’s inside the box.

So, anyway, music streaming app Spotify is already preloaded in to the device. We know there are many Spotify Premium subscribers here so you’ll just have to log in your account and download your playlists in order for you to listen even offline. If you are not yet a Spotify user, Globe is offering a premium service in which it is ad free and available for offline listening. Please do check Globe’s website for more information.

We used both in ear plugs and headphones and we are pleased with the audio quality. It is not the best we’ve tested though its acceptable for everyday use. We are not audiophiles though we have some taste in listening into details. Quality is quite close to your expensive third party earphones. But if you have those budget earphones, you will definitely love the audio from the headphones and in ear plugs that comes with the package.

The 5-inch display is generally OK. It is not the best HD display we’ve seen but it is definitely not bad at all. It has good color reproduction but lack that certain brightness you need when using it under the sun.

One gripe we have is the Cloudfone Thrill 500X Spotify Edition still runs a much older version on Android – version 4.4 Kitkat. Though Kitkat is generally smooth and polished, it is definitely old and some apps are now optimized with newer versions like Marhsmallow and Lollipop.

The 13 megapixel rear camera from the Cloudfone Thrill 500X Spotify Edition takes decent photos. It is not great but some good details are there. You can check our sample photos below.

One thing that Cloudfone should consider is to offer more LTE capable smartphones. The Cloudfone Thrill 500X does not have LTE but so far our 3G tests got pretty good results. Calls are clear too without no issues.

The 4,000 mAh battery can really take you that extra mile! The Cloudfone Thrill 500X Spotify Edition barely sips battery on standby. We tried not using the phone for 3 days but it is turned on and on standby and we got 78% battery from 83% when we left it. On heavy use, we used the phone mainly for Spotify, You Tube, I Want TV, Clash of Clans, and Angry Birds 2. The battery lasted 10 hours with 24% power left and that is with brightness at 50%, 3G and WiFi turned on.

The Cloudfone Thrill 500X Spotify Edition does not just appeal to Spotify fans but to those who are on the go as well. There are people who simply have no time to plug in their smartphones and these people deserve a smartphone like this. Hardcore Spotify listeners will also like the endurance of this device for as you can listen to your favorite music longer than any smartphone. Oh, before we forget, you’ll get a long lasting smartphone with tons of freebies (Spotify Edition headphones and in-ear plugs, clear case and a Globe SIM) for only P5,999. Now, that’s a deal you can’t refuse. 🙂
