Asus Zenfone 2 ZE500CL Unboxing and Hands On

We finally have an Asus Zenfone 2 for review! But wait, this is not the Zenfone 2 variant with 32GB/4GB RAM (ZE551ML) nor the 16GB/2GB RAM (ZE550ML) one. This is the most affordable Zenfone 2 variant – ZE500CL. This phone is said to be the direct successor of the Asus Zenfone 5 because it still has the same processor and screen size. Aside from that, it has an affordable price tag. Let’s unbox it!

Asus Zenfone 2 ZE500CL:

  • 1.6GHz Dual Core Intel Atom Z2560 processor
  • PowerVR SGX544MP2 graphics
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage expandable via MicroSD up to 64GB
  • 5-inch HD IPS LCD display (1280 x 720 pixels) 294 ppi
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 8 megapixel rear facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 2 megapixel front facing camera
  • Single SIM (micro)
  • LTE, HSPA+, WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 2,500 mAh battery
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop with Zen UI

What’s inside the box?

  • unit itself
  • earphones
  • extra earbuds
  • USB cable
  • adapter

Note: As of this writing, all Asus Zenfone 2 variants are NOT YET OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE in Asus stores and retailers. We bought our unit at Premium Mobile in SM Megamall for P10,500. Premium Mobile gets their smartphone directly from abroad.

Holding true to its specs and design, the Asus Zenfone 2 ZE500CL  is truly the direct successor of the Asus Zenfone 5. The curved back makes the phone easier to hold with the help of its soft touch matte finish. We find 5-inch smartphones as our sweet spot and it is easy to hold it with one hand. We saw the higher end Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML and we still prefer the ZE500CL’s one-handed use. One thing we don’t like about the phone is the power button placed on top of the device which is quite inconvenient and hand to reach.

The software experience is generally pleasing. It has the Zen UI of Asus on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Zen UI is one of our favorite Android UI and has got better. More on that on our full review next week. We would like to point out that we updated more than 50 apps and bloatware in which Asus has it pre-installed on the device.

We will be using this as our daily driver and expect our review within a week.
