Cloudfone Excite 470q Review

Quad Core smartphones are getting more affordable these days and users getting confused on what phone to get. If the Cloudfone Excite 470q is one of your choices, you better read on with this review. The Excite 470q is an entry level quad core smartphone with mid-tier specs. Priced at P4,999, would this be a better choice over competitors like the MyPhone Rio or the Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum? Let’s find out.

The back cover when it clean

The back cover full of fingerprints and grease.

Augh! Another shiny smartphone. Honestly we do not have much love with smartphones with shiny back cover for it attracts fingerprints, oil and grease. It eeeky! But despite its greasy prone body, the phone is very well built. We do notice this many times from phones by Cloudfone. They do have some added weight despite its slender body.

The Excite 470q has a 4.7-inch qHD display which is very sharp and bright but not bright enough to use under direct sunlight. For some, a 4.7-inch display is still a soft spot due to their small hands which is norm in our country. Good thing Cloudfone opted to fit in a 4.7 inch display on this phone as we rarely see smartphones with this screen size nowadays.

Overall performance of the Cloudfone Excite 470q is generally ok. It means lags and hiccups are evident but rare. However, we experienced some problems when playing games and typing messages using the stock keyboard. We always press the wrong letter or command during our gaming sessions. We think it is a software glitch and not the 1.3GHz Quad Core Mediatek MT6582. Download a third party keyboard if you are bothered by this glitch.

The smarpthone showed impressive results on our Antutu Benchmark tests – 17,336

Pictures taken from the 8 megapixel camera are pretty good in good lighting conditions. Take the any good lighting away and it will the show its weakness. We cannot expect so much from its camera at this price point but we are still giving the camera a passing grade. It won’t fail to give good color reproduction and accuracy plus good amount of sharpness on your photos when you post it on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

Here are some camera samples:

We’ve read some reviews from our fellow tech bloggers about the phone’s underwhelming battery. Well, based on our usage, the Excite 470q lasted 7 to 8 hours of moderate to heavy usage  with 10% remaining in the tank. For us, that is decent considering how heavy smartphone users we are.

If you heavily rely on your WiFi connection, better put your phone near the router because once you take it away for about 4 meters, the WiFi reception starts to diminish. HSPA+ connection using our Globe SIM is generally ok as long as you are on Globe’s strong HSPA+ network.

We hope that Cloudfone could release a firmware update to fix some bugs on our review unit. Let’s just hope that it is just our own unit only. Anyway, if you are looking for a  phone smaller than 5-inches, then the Cloudfone Excite 470q is the phone for you. It is a good alternative if you are choosing between the MyPhone Rio and the Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum.
