Cloudfone Thrill 550q Review

Smartphones with HD display with an affordable pricetag remains to be few. So far we only know 2 smartphones below 10k that has a 720p HD display. The Cloudfone Thrill 550q is a welcome addition to the bunch. It has pretty decent specs and of course, the advantage of an HD display and affordable P8,999 pricetag is quite compelling for any user to consider this phone to buy.  We took the phone with us during our stay in Davao  City and Tagum, a city north of Davao and here’s our review.

Cloudfone Thrill 550q specs:

  • 1.2GHz Quad Core Mediatek MTK6589 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal memory expandable via MicroSD
  • 5.5-inch HD LCD display (720 x 1280 pixels)
  • 13 megapixel rear facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 3.2 megapixel front facing camera
  • HSPA+, WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth
  • Dual SIM, Dual Standby
  • 2,500 mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jellybean
  • Price: P8,999
  • Status: Available on Cloudfone stores, kiosks and retailers

The Cloudfone Thrill 550q shares the same design with its sibling, the Cloudfone Thrill 530qx. The only difference is its thinner body. This phone is a tank! It is extremely well built and has a very solid feel. The only downside though is its quite heavy. We actually felt the weight especially when it is inside our pockets. But we do like the rubber matte finish for better grip.

The phone has a 5.5-inch HD IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Although it is sharp, the display seems to be washed out and color reproduction could be better.

The 1,2GHz quad core Mediatek processor performed well on our tests from basic ones to playing power hungry games like Dead Trigger 2. We rarely experience any lags during our time with it. Based on our Antutu Benchmark tests the Cloudfone Thrill 550q scored 13,539 points.

We would like to note that the WiFi reception from this phone is outstanding. It gets better WiFi signal than our own LG G2 or any gadgets that we have. HSPA+ speeds from both Globe or Smart are within normal speeds. Calls are clear and our voice is audible at the end of the line. Texting is a breeze thanks its big 5.5-inch display.

We find the photos taken from the  13 megapixel rear facing camera pretty decent though pictures look a little washed out. Outdoor shots are better than we expected. The lack of BSI is very evident on pictures taken in low light areas. Even the flash is not powerful enough to improve the picture quality.

Cloudfone has been known for making smartphones with humongous batteries but in the case of the Cloudfone Thrill 550q, it has a normal sized 2,500 mAh battery. The battery lasted 10 hours of moderate to heavy use – hours of gaming, watching online livestream via iWantv, an hour of calls, surfing the net. That’s pretty good considering that the phone has HD display.

We really can’t deny that the Cloudfone Thrill 550q is an all-around performer. Solid build quality, smooth performance, good camera and outstanding battery life. If you can forgive its shortcomings like the mediocre display and its overweight body, you’ll never get wrong with the Cloudfone Thrill 550q.
