Starmobile Navi Review: The Best Smartphone Under P5,000

The Starmobile Navi is the company’s most affordable quad core smartphone which is priced at P3,990. The smartphone is competing with the likes of Cherry Mobile Flare S and Flare 2X. If you are planning to buy a phone below 5k, then better read this review first.  We had low expectations of this phone but we were surprised of what the phone’s capabilities. Read on with the review.

Starmobile Navi specs:

  • 1.2GHz Quad Core Broadcom BCM23550 graphics
  • VideoCore IV graphics
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage expandable via MicroSD up to 32GB
  • 4-inch WVGA display (480 x 800 pixels)
  • 5 megapixel front facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • VGA front facing camera
  • Dual SIM, Dual Standby
  • HSPA+, WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jellybean
  • SRP: P3,990

Being affordable does not mean its build quality is already compromised. That’s not the case with Starmobile. The company did a great job when it comes to the phone’s design and build quality. We do prefer the Navi’s stylish and sturdy design versus Cherry Mobile’s offerings.

Of course there are trade-offs and one of them is the smallish display. Since we do have big hands, its kinda hard for us to use the phone for texting and online chatting.  Despite its small display, we do admire how sharp and vivid the screen is. It is even usable under direct sunlight.

We do wonder why Starmobile has opted to use another unknown SoC maker Broadcom over local brands top choice, Mediatek. The 1.2GHz quad core processor was generally fluid on most cases although minor lags are noticed when loading games. Light games like Flappy Bird will ran very smoothly here. Based on Antutu benchmarks, the phone got a score of 13,321 which is pretty low compared to the scores found on other quad core smartphones.

We would like to point out that this phone has GLONASS. A lot of local smartphones doesn’t have this feature. But what is GLONASS? It stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, a Russian-made satellite navigation system which has an American counterpart – GPS (Global Positioning System). GLONASS can help along with GPS and A-GPS give a more accurate position when it comes to navigation. If you use Waze, Google Maps or Foursquare frequently, better buy this phone.

To be honest, we do expect crappy pictures from this device. We were surprised that the 5 megapixel camera takes pretty decent pictures! Two thumbs up Starmobile!

Battery is one of our biggest disappointments. We only managed to get 5 hours of heavy usage – an that’s long You Tube time, long gaming time, WiFi and 3G on, 100% brightness, heavy calling and texting via Viber. On our light to moderate usage, we managed to get 8 to 9 hours of battery.

For us, the battery is forgivable because you can bring a power bank if  you cannot find a power socket. But this phone is KICK ASS! Meaning you can kiss Cherry Mobile’s Flare line goodbye! This phone is the best smartphone under 5k! Period!
