Starmobile never disappoints us when it comes to the build quality of their products. The Starmobile Muse is well built, extremely lightweight and very comfortable to hold. We even prefer holding  and putting this on our pockets than the Sony Xperia Z1, one of our favorite smartphones of 2013. We would like to point out that the phone has a unibody design which means the back plate is non-removable. There’s  no slot for MicroSD expansion so you would have to settle to the phone’s onboard 16GB memory.  Need more space? No problem! The Muse is USB OTG (on-the -go) capable. Transfer pictures and other files in a jiffy to your flash drive.

When you first get a hold of the the Starmobile Muse, you’ll first notice the the full HD screen. The icons really pop out! It has great viewing angles, bright, sharp and produces accurate colors. We notice a cooler tone on the display. It is also usable under direct sunlight.  Worry not about scratches because the screen is protected by Asahi’s Dragontrail scratch resistant glass.

Powered by a 1.5GHz quad core Mediatek MT6589 processor, we expect better performance. Surprisingly, the Starmobile Muse performed better compared with smartphones powered by 1.2GHz or 1.3GHz quad core processors. When it comes to games, everything went smooth and lag free but we wish it could be better if Starmobile opted 2GB RAM over 1GB RAM. A bigger RAM can maximize the phone’s full HD display. On our Antutu benchmark tests, we got 14,631 which is quite low compared to other devices.

And now, the portion we have been waiting for – the camera. It is indeed the best camera from a local brand! We would not comment further so just take a look on the pictures taken from the 18 megapixel rear facing camera.

Low light condition. Using the dual LED flash

And now for the 8 megapixel front facing camera. The Starmobile Muse is taking selfies to a whole new level because it has a front facing camera FLASH! Pictures are great on good lighting conditions. Take for example at the photo below of our good friend who likes to take selfies.

We took the liberty to take a selfie shot of the author while he is inside his car on the way home last night. As you can see, the front facing flash works!

All connections work just fine – WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G. However, we have not tested the USB OTG capabilities. Anyway, We used Globe and Smart SIM for its HSPA+ connectivity and we got the usual speeds of 3 to 5Mbps on areas that these networks have fast internet service.

We did underestimate the phone’s 2,300 mAh battery considering the phone has a full HD display and a more poweful processor. We were surprised that the battery lasted longer than we expected. On our heavy usage, we got 8 hours of battery life before it needs charging while on our light to moderate usage, we were able to stretch the battery to 12 hours.

Starmobile’s flagships are getting better and better. The Muse will soon be replaced by the Diamond X1 ( the smartphone with an octa-core processor) but still this phone still has the best camera coupled with its excellent build quality and stunning 5-inch full HD display. This phone will win the hearts of those who like taking selfies and those what we call #GGSS (gandang ganda sa sarili or gwapong gwapo sa sarili). Hahahaha!
