Globe Reports 173% Increase On Data Traffic During The Holidays

Philippine telco Globe Telecom reported a 173% increase of data usage among its subscribers during the Christmas season. According to Globe’s chief technical adviser Richard Tan, aside from its the surge of data traffic, there was also an increase of voice calls and sms  during same period.

This only proves that Globe’s newly modernized network is capable enough to handle the sudden demand for voice, SMS and internet. If you guys can remember, Globe has recently completed their $700 Million network modernization program and currently in the middle of a $90 Million IT upgrade.

The increase of data reflects the increase of subscribers using smartphones and tablets. More and more Filipinos are now switching to smartphones and tablets thanks to affordable gadgets made by local brands. I was roaming around malls during the holidays and the top gift choices are either smartphones or tablets. Every mall I visit, gadget shops are flocked with Christmas shoppers. More people are now sending their Christmas greetings via social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and chat apps Viber, Line, KakaoTalk and WeChat.

Globe is currently offering free Facebook access until January 25, 2014.
