Google surprised us with the unveiling of the Nexus 5 running the latest Android 4.4 KitKat. This new OS is said to be coming to a billion Android phones worldwide next year. Even smartphones with entry level specs like dual core processors or with only 512 RAM will get KitKat update. Sony was the first OEM (original equipment manufacturer) to announce Android 4.4 Kitkat update will be coming to the Xperia line.
According to Sony, these are the following smartphones will be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat – Xperia Z1, Xpera Z, Xperia ZL, and Xperia Z Ultra. The update will be due for early next year but these smartphones will be updated first to Android 4.3 Jellybean this November or December.
Here are the following smartphones getting only Android 4.3 Jellybean – Xperia T, Xperia TX, and Xperia V.
It seems that it won’t be long before LG will be updating their smartphones as well. A leaked poster from a French mobile operator indicate an update to Android 4.4 KitKat is due sometime in December. I guess LG has an advantage of getting the update first because they are Google’s partner in making the Nexus 5.
How about Samsung? Its kinda disappointing to know that Samsung is just rolling out Android 4.3 Jellybean to Galaxy S3. Galaxy S4, Note 2 and Note 3 and no word for a KitKat update. I will be be switching back to Android soon from iOS (I own an iPhone 5) this month and I haven’t decided yet on whether to get the Sony Xperia Z1 or the LG G2. Both phones are great and I’m aware of the pros and cons of these devices.
