Today marks a history when country’s No. 2 telecom GLOBE and country’s No. 1 TV network ABS-CBN forged a “network sharing” agreement. ABS-CBN thru its subsidiary ABS-CBN Convergence Inc. will offer mobile services using Globe’s network. If you still remember , National Telecommunications Commision (NTC) allowed Globe to use Bayan Telecommunication’s (ABS-CBN’s sister company) frequency and vice versa. to improve network traffic of calls, texts and internet. Eventually Globe assumed Bayan’s debt and acquired a majority stake in Bayan. In exchange for this deal, Bayan’s sister company ABS-CBN will offer mobile services.
The new service will be called “ABS-CBN Mobile”. Just other telcos, they will sell SIM cards, sell smartphones and tablets and offer prepaid and postpaid services. What’s new is ABS-CBN Mobile will get exclusive ABS-CBN content. For those who missed their favorite ABS-CBN shows, a subscriber can access it thru their mobile devices. Impressive!
According to ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, in essence, ABS-CBN Convergence Inc will be a “third player” in telecom industry. PLDT together with mobile subsidiaries Smart Communications and Sun Cellular remains the No. 1 telco in terms of subscribers and network reach. Globe Telecom remains the No. 2 telco. ABS-CBN will be assuming 3rd place. Hmmmm… How is that possible? ABS-CBN will be using Globe’s network so this means ABS-CBN Mobile part of Globe from what others see it. But according to ABS-CBN, they will be offering call, text and internet services plus sell mobile devices but will offer ABS-CBN content that sets apart from Globe and PLDT.
ABS-CBN is still waiting for government regulator approvals and is set to offer the mobile service by the end of the year.
Being a loyal Kapamilya televiewer and a loyal Globe subscriber, this is one hell of a good news!!!
