Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs Apple iPhone XS | Camera Comparison
Random outdoor shots in daylight. The shot on the Mate 20 Pro looks sharper than the other photo. The problem with it is that the HDR was hidden on the separate Modes that’s why you still need to select it to take a photo with good dynamic range. Meanwhile, the iPhone XS photo shows a more balanced dynamic range. You can see that it automatically lightens the darker parts with its Auto HDR.
Close-up shots. The only difference that we see in this category is the color temperature. The Mate 20 Pro shows a natural color while the iPhone XS has a slightly warmer color on photos.
Aperture Mode / Portrait Mode. Both devices has good edge detection. The Mate 20 Pro has a dedicated Portrait Mode for people and Aperture Mode for objects. The Portrait Mode has foreground and background filters that you can choose from while the Aperture Mode has an adjustable blur effect that you can set before and after taking the shot. On the other hand, the iPhone XS only has a Portrait mode that works perfectly on any subject. It automatically zoom to 2x when using this feature that results to a narrower background as compared to the wider background on the Mate 20 Pro.
Indoor shots (good lighting). In here, the Mate 20 Pro has sharper images on most of the shots while the iPhone XS has a more vibrant colors on its images.
Outdoor (low-light). Using the auto mode on both devices, the iPhone XS has a warmer low-light shots as compared to the natural color on the Mate 20 Pro. And still, sharpness is on point on the Huawei device.
Indoor (low-light). Both devices can capture good photos in this kind of environment. The only difference is that the iPhone XS has a better exposure management. See the first four photos, on the iPhone XS, the trees are still visible and the light that was reflected on the photo has been minimized. On the other side, the Mate 20 Pro has better noise reduction as compared to the iPhone XS which has very noticeable noises specially on dark parts of the photos.
Back-light selfie. Thanks to the AI HDR of the Mate 20 Pro, it managed to lighten the face and also shows the clouds on the background. The Mate 20 Pro also has a wider selfie camera. On the iPhone XS, it has a more natural skin color but the background has been over exposed.
Portrait Mode on the front camera. The Mate 20 Pro has variety of of bokeh shapes that you can choose from like circles, hearts, swirl, and discs. Activating any of these bokeh effects adds an artificial blur effect on the background but we feel that it also boosts the brightness that leads to over exposed photo. Unlike the one on the iPhone XS, the edge detection is better and the exposure is so natural same with the blur effect.
Indoor selfie. The Mate 20 Pro has a brighter shot here. We also feel that it softens the skin even though we are just using the Photo Mode without any beautification. On the other hand, the iPhone XS still has a more natural color and it managed to show the background specially the scene outside the resto.
Back-light selfie (low-light). Unlike during day-light, the Mate 20 Pro now over exposed the background on this photo. The iPhone XS has managed to balance the amount of light and still able to show the background.
