HMD Global has unveiled two new smartphones in India. This is not, as expected, the Nokia 9, but the Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 5.1 Plus. These offer an iPhone X-like design, a lot of hardware features in an affordable price and will soon appear in other countries.

After the Nokia X6 (6.1 Plus) appeared in China in May, a survey by senior product manager HMD Global revealed that 92% of the more than 8,500 respondents wished that they want the Nokia X6 to be available outside of China. Accordingly, the group dubbed the 6.1 Plus in the run-up to the presentation as the most-anticipated Nokia smartphone.

The mid-range smartphone features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the front and back, featuring the main feature of a 5.9-inch FHD+ display in 19:9 format with a display notch. The processor is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636. 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory (expandable via microSD) are installed. A 16-megapixel camera can be found on the front and back, and the main camera is supported by a monochrome 5-megapixel secondary sensor.

Bluetooth 5.0 and a 3.060 mAh battery are also available, but it lacks the NFC and wireless charging. Like the other Nokia models, the 6.1 Plus belongs to the Android One program, but it still installs with Oreo instead of Android Pie. This should be updated nearly soon.

In India, the Nokia 6.1 Plus is sold for just under INR 16,000, equivalent to EUR 199. Thus, the model would compete directly with the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite, which offers similar features and price.

Nokia 6.1 Plus specs

  • 5.8-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display (1080 x 2280 pixels) 19:9 aspect ratio
  • Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor
  • Adreno 630 graphics
  • 4GB RAM / 64GB internal memory
  • Expandable storage up to 400GB

  • 16 MP (f/2.0 aperture) front-facing camera

  • 4G/LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, Face Unlock, Fingerprint Scanner

On the other hand, the Nokia 5.1 Plus, which HMD Global has now introduced in India, is slightly cheaper. For the equivalent of EUR 130, it offers similar features as the Nokia 6.1 Plus and is aimed, among others, at budget-conscious gamers. A 5.86-inch HD+ display with a 19:9 format and a slightly wider notch dominate the front, while the back is also made of glass and next to the fingerprint sensor, a dual camera with 13 or 5 megapixels. The front is an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

With 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory (also expandable), however, the storage is smaller than its bigger sibling. As a processor, a MediaTek Helio P60 is used.

According to several sources, the two smartphones will be released in Europe in September, so an appearance at the IFA would not be ruled out. Maybe we’ll get to see the long-awaited Nokia 9.
