In the past years, Samsung has brought a variety of A-series smartphones to the country but this year, they only brought only two. Both devices are very identcal with each other and very much alike with their flagship siblings. The only differences we could determine iare the following – memory, screen size and battery.

Lets start with the build. We were surprised to know how light these devices are despite being made of metal and glass. It is because we find its higher end siblings, the Galaxy S8/S8+ and the Note 8 to be quite hefty. The smaller Galaxy A8 (2018) with its 5.6-inch display is the more favorable to hold in one hand especially with thin and slender body.

Now off with the display. Though only with Full HD resolution the Super AMOLED panels on both devices are nice to at eve, n under direct sunlight. It has the new standard 18:9 aspect ratio. No complains here as Super AMOLED remains to be the best display panel today.

Due to our limited time with it, we were not able to test the camera and its overall performance. But based on the specs, the Exynos 7885 is not as powerful as the Exynos 8895 of the Note 8. It is however better performing than the likes of Snapdragon 450 or Exynos 7870 chipsets. We believe it matches the likes of the Snapdragon 652 chipset.

Though we may not be able to get some sample photos, we managed to get a look at camera UI. It lacks auto HDR and optica image stabilization but on the flip side we are happy to know that it has a bright f/1,7 aperture on the cameras of both phones. This mean you get more light and better night shots

INITIAL VERDICT

The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and  the Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2019) are two good phones with great build quality and flagship level features such as water resistance,18:9 display and decent sized batteries.

Our biggest turn off are their prices – P26,990 for the Galaxy A8(2018)  and P32,990 for tor the Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018). The prices is already pushing the flagship territory. For P26,990 you can get the  OnePlus 5T wich has flagship specs without water resistance and for P32,990 you can get the Huawei Mate 10 without the 18:9 aspect ratio display and water resistance.

Look beyond the price and you will get two great phones. We recommend you take a look at them and consider it on your wishlist. 🙂
