HARDWARE AND DESIGN
There is nothing really spectacular about its design because Starmobile made it gives you a functional and hand-friendly product. What we love about it is the built qualty. It may be a cheap smartphone but cheaply built. The company has been proving that for years now with their smartphones lasting for years. We still see our friends still using their 2-year old Starmobile phones and still in a very good condition.
Sometimes, smartphones at this price range does not have HD displays but no LTE connectivity or vice versa. The Starmobile UP Prime has both. The 5-inch IPS display has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is quite and colorful and surprisingly not a dull display. It struggles a bit outdoors but the display can’t be seen if you use under direct sunlight.
SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE
Mediatek chipsets have improved a lot as they handle heavy multi tasking and games better though it is not as in par with Qualcomm chipsets. The Starmobile UP Prime is powered by a quad core Mediatek MT6737 chipset paired with 1GB RAM.
With these specs, it can do multitasking and light gaming but we urge you not to push the device too much. 1GB RAM can’t handle memory hogging, graphic intense games. Switching between apps is a breeze though.
On the software side, Starmobile continues its tradition minimizing the customization on the UI. You will some useful pre-installed Starmobile apps like Starmobile Care and Viu video streaming app. Daily performance has been terrific. Basic tasks like Facebook, Instagram, email, Netflix, Viu and I Want TV are lag free.
We must admit that the 8 megapixel and 5 megapixel cameras are not the phone’s best selling feature. On the flip side, it is not a bad camera. We got good photos as long we have good light but the camera struggles in low light. Here, check out some of our photos.
It is great to know that the Starmobile UP Prime supports LTE bands including the ultra fast 700MHz LTE bands. We used the provided Smart LTE SIM, which will be available when you buy one, internet speeds the usual – fast as long as you are in the location where Smart has good internet speeds.
What about Globe? Good thing the device is not locked to any network so you can insert your Globe SIM there. Calls are clear with no issues and same with the other end of the line.
The 3,000 mAh battery should give more than a day of moderate to heavy use and it actually did. The chipset and its HD display sips less battery than higher end smartphones which means longer battery, longer endurance. We averaged around 12 hours of mixed to moderate use.
If you are looking for an LTE capable smartphone for at this price range, well you’re in luck! The Starmobile UP Prime will check out the boxes. Aside from LTE, you have a nice and bright HD display, smooth performance and reliable battery. Freebies such as a free SIM, free data for a year just made the deal sweeter.
