Smartphones nowadays have three cameras – two at the back and one at the front. The two cameras work together to give a photo a more in-depth color and sharpness that is really close to a professional camera. Many smartphones now have been continuously improving their cameras plus infusing good software enhancements for photos.

Aside from that, many smartphone brands have also been improving the selfie experience by putting much better sensors for their front facing shooters. But Kata wanted to be different hoping they could get a big chunk on a market dominated by selfie-centric smartphones from Oppo and Vivo. Here comes the Kata Selfie, a smartphone that will make your selfie experience quite different. Read on to find out.

HARDWARE AND DESIGN

Comparing it with the Vivo V5 and Oppo F1s, the Kata Selfie will stand out when they are grouped together. The device is encased on a plastic back with a metal frame and glass on front. We do love the white variant which we had our first impressions over this black black variant that we have. It is noticeably light and slim which we like. We could wish that the top and bottom bezels could be smaller but its alright.

Audio quality from both the speakers and through the 3.5mm headset jack are just fine. We do love the black variant more than the white one in which we had our first impressions.  It looks so classy. 🙂

DISPLAY

This is the first time we encountered a Kata smartphone on Full HD display and its gorgeous! The colors do pop though with a cooler tone and it lends to favor the bluish side. The 5.5-inch display has good viewing angles with very good sunlight legibility.

SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE

Kata still tweaks the Android experience with the elimination of the app drawer so all our apps are on the home screen. You can always download a third party launcher if you wish to customize your user experience.

We are wondering why Kata opted to use an older processor here but the MT6753 has been proven to be efficient and reliable despite being a 2015 chipset. On heavy tasks the Mediatek chipset never bugs down. Special thanks with its generous 3GB RAM which more than enough for the tasks and open apps.

CAMERA

Yep, the Kata Selfie may only have one camera but it is a very capable shooter. It takes great photos in good light. Colors do pop with clarity and sharpness. When taking selfies, just rotate the camera to the front and tada, selfie time!

CONNECTIVITY

The Kata Selfie supports 700Mhz LTE band, the newest and fastest ultra fast internet band acquired by the duopoly PLDT and Globe from the would-be San Miguel telco. Since very few smartphones support this band in the Philippines expect blazing fast internet speeds. We used our Smart SIM to test its LTE capabilities and the Selfie did not disappoint.  Calls are clear with no issues and Bluetooth and WiFi comes in standard.

BATTERY

We are happy to report that the 3,000 mAh battery lasted about 9 hours of heavy battery life with about 4 hours and 12 minutes of screen on time. On normal use, we manage to get 12 hours of power. Nice!

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Truly, Kata has managed to offer something different for the selfie loving crowd. One camera for everything is something unique and different.

  • Wants a unique way to take selfies. A flipping camera is cool!
  • Selfie lovers – obviously. 🙂
  • Hates iPhone-like design – Many smartphones now do look the same. It is quite refreshing to see a stand out design.
