HARDWARE AND DESIGN

Holding the Elephone S1 feels like we are holding a premium and expensive smartphone. The metal and glass combination reminds us of the old Apple iPhone 4s with its glossy glass and chamfered edges. It is really a beautiful smartphone! We are not sure if the front and back glass is scratch resistant but to make sure, always put on a case that is included on the package.

DISPLAY

There is nothing much on the display. The good news is it is bright and vivid. It does have good color saturation. Our scope of our short review did not cover how well will it do outdoors.

SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE

Unlike the P8000 and P9000, the Elephone S1 has a custom UI on top of Android called Freeme OS. It does eliminate the app drawer leaving all your apps on the home screen. The UI is not ugly but we are not fans of it. Performance was generally smooth. We installed our favorite game, Clash Royale and it ran well here with no slowdowns.

CAMERA

Elephone used a Sony sensor for its rear camera. So far we are very impressed with the sample shots we’ve taken. Take a look at our sample photos below.

BATTERY AND CONNECTIVITY

The Elephone S1 does not have LTE but 3G connectivity will do just fine. We were not able to insert our SIM here due to our limited time with it. We did test the feature that other smartphones does not have at this price point – a fingerprint scanner. It will well and unlocks the phone in a second. We were just having trouble unlocking the device when we our finger is positioned differently.

VERDICT

The Elephone S1 is a game changer. Making a phone with premium materials like glass and metal plus the addition of a fingerprint scanner will make it standout among the competition. At P3,999 it is truly a bang for buck smartphone. 🙂
