HARDWARE AND DESIGN
Starmobile has been known for making well designed, well built smartphones and the Starmobile UP Ultra never disappoints us when it comes to that department. It is indeed a beautiful smarpthone. We also love how small and light this device is despite having a large 5.5-inch display. The top and bottom chin has been reduced making it smaller than other smartphones with the same screen size.
The Starmobile UP Ultra has also joined the growing number of local smartphones using faux leather at the back. We actually prefer this one than matte finished back covers. It makes the phone look more premium.
Audio coming out of the bottom firing front speaker is quite loud but lacks quality. It is not bad though we’ve tested other phones with this price range with better audio quality.
The 5.5-inch display has good color reproduction and viewing angles. It is the device’s best feature. We also love using the phone under direct sunlight. Auto brightness works fine as well.
SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE
Starmobile opted to use stock Android UI on the Starmobile UP Ultra. Software ran smoothly with no lags or stutter. The 2GB of RAM handles multitasking very well and we never experienced any slowdowns while playing games.
The 13 megapixel rear camera on the Starmobile UP Ultra is actually a Samsung sensor. Camera sensors made by Samsung are known to give rich colors on photos. See for yourself and check out our sample photos below.
Before we forget, the Starmobile UP Ultra comes with a free Smart Prepaid SIM loaded with 700MB worth of monthly data which is good for 1 year. It also comes with 6 months free iFlix subscription. We decided to insert our own Smart SIM and LTE connectivity is generally good. Calls are clear as well. We also tested the Bluetooth and connect our Samsung Galaxy Gear S2 smartwatch.
Though we think that the 2,500 mAh battery is quite small for a smartphone a large display, we are pleased to report that the Starmobile UP Ultra’s battery is above average. On our heavy use, we managed to get around 7 hours of combined You Tube, I Want TV, gaming, social networks while the phone’s LTE, WiFi hotspot, and GPS is turned on.
We highly recommend the Starmobile UP Ultra to those who are looking for more than just an LTE smartphone because it comes with free data and phone case. Aside from that, you’ll get a well built smartphone, good camera, decent display and surprisingly good battery life.
