Last October 13, 2015, Canon introduced two new top-line cameras under the PowerShot G series banner, the PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X. The G series has been one of the longest running PowerShot camera lines starting as far back as September 2000 with the PowerShot G1. These are cameras with brilliance and legacy behind them. So, let’s see what they have to offer this time around.
Both the PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X house a 1 inch, 20.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor where typical point and shoot cameras use around 1/2.3 inch (ex. Canon Ixus & Lumix LX7) and 1/1.7 inch sensor. Since, the PowerShot G5 X and G9 X use a much bigger sensor, they capture more light and this increases the quality of your photos by lessening the digital grain you see in them. They also use the same Digic 6 image sensor which processes larger file sizes faster. Lastly, both have an ISO range of 125-12800 which is also expandable to 25600. This gives the consumer the capability to shoot in low light scenarios.
For Video, the PowerShot G5 X and G9 X can capture 1080p Full HD video (MP4 format). They have a built-in Neutral Density (ND) filter that will help manage your photos exposure in bright environments. This is also near necessity in shooting outdoor videos.
In this social media wired world, the PowerShot G5 X and G9 X has you covered with built-in Wifi and NFC which enables the user to transfer images and access the controls remotely via your mobile phone through Camera Connect App which is available in Google Play and iTunes.

Since, they are very similar, we recommend the PowerShot G9 X for those that want a camera that you can put in your pocket and shoot anywhere at any time. For those that are looking to start photography as hobby but don’t to invest in a full camera system yet, the PowerShot G5 X is for you. Both the PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X will be available in US this November. There is no announcement as of this writing of a local release here in the Philippines yet.
