Local manufacturer Cloudfone surprised us when they sent a review unit of the Cloudfone Excite 502q 2 days ago! This phone is out to challenge the MyPhone Rio in the sub 5k and 5-inch smartphone category. Just like the Rio, the Excite 502q has the same processor, screen size, and comes with different colors too. We would like to share our first impressions with it.

Design-wise, the Cloudfone Excite 502q has some resemblance of the Apple iPhone 5c with its glossy but colorful plastic back. Out of the box, it comes in black but it has a green back cover included in the package. So, we decided to take out the black one and put on the green one.

For some reason we can’t explain, it felt like we’re travelling back in the early 2000s where Nokia still rules the mobile world. Remember those colorful Nokia cases for the Nokia 3310, 3210 and 5110 before? Nokia actually revived this trend recently with its Lumia devices and then Apple followed with the iPhone 5c. This year, Samsung, Sony and other Android brands followed the trend and now local brands MyPhone and Cloudfone are doing the same thing.

This pastel green color gives a youthful vibe on us. We were walking around the mall yesterday and people can’t stop looking the phone we’re using. While sitting on Coffee Bean (our usual hang out place to test gadgets), one girl (probably on her teens) approached us and asked what phone are we using. She got surprised when we answered her question “How much?”

The screen is a 5-inch FWVGA IPS LCD display. It may have a low resolution display, but the screen is incredibly bright and vivid thanks to its One Glass Solution (OGS) feature. Cloudfone did some customizations with the stock Android UI which gives the phone a distinctive look.

For us, the Cloudfone Excite 502q should be on your shopping list when looking for an afforable but quality smartphone. We will be testing this phone’s camera, performance, gaming and battery on our full review.

SPOILER ALERT!
